I love this tie. It’s old J. Press. But I don’t think they would make it today. It would probably be considered “offensive” or something like that. But is it? Well first, what is it?
It’s a motif tie, of course. And the motif is that of an American Indian playing Lacrosse. Lacrosse came from the American Indians originally. The tie is an homage. Yes, it’s playful. Preppy style is often playful. And motif ties are particularly playful.
Really, it reflects a certain kind of old American relationship with American Indian history. Yes, ultimately, we conquered America, but by the time the 20th century came around there was a sense of something close to honoring the American Indians. It was more old school. They put up a good fight, but then we won and so now we will memorialize them in our own way. This was the old way.
